Mathematics Fifth Grade "I Can" Statements for KY NEW Mathematics Standards

There are few tools more helpful in the classroom than the effective use of "I Can"t statements. These standard-aligned “I Can” Statements can be posted so students can read and refer to them throughout Reading and Writing instruction. When posted in the classroom, the statements can be reviewed at the beginning of the lesson and throughout the class period, helping the teacher keep the focus of the lesson while assisting the students in focusing their thinking. The statements are written and communicated so they can be formatively assessed throughout the lesson.

"I Can" statements are best printed on light-weight cardstock and laminated for durability. Because all classrooms are unique, we have also included five EDITABLE slides for teachers to use if they wish to compose their own "I can" for some standards. Wording of an “I Can” statement can be revised using these templates while maintaining the intent of the standard.
