Description

Math Reciprocal Teaching Cards and Posters

Reciprocal Teaching is a research-based strategy to help students use accountable talk to improve their understanding of concepts.

Students who work in peer partnerships make measurable academic gains, develop more positive attitudes toward subject matter, become less dependent on the teacher, and spend more time on a task when working with a partner than when working independently (King-Sears & Bradley, 1995).
I use these cards and posters to help my students in their math conversations with peers during skills review at the teacher table and when they are practicing concepts without teacher assistance. Students receive their question set and the answers to their partner’s question set. Partners take turns answering their questions. While partner A works on her question, partner B assists with thinking using these cards and posters, as well as anchor charts, as a scaffold. Throughout the process, I have seen students become more independent and internalize the strategies that they have practiced with their partners.
While I use these cards with the question sets that follow the reciprocal teaching model, you can use them with ANY math skill. Since this method is best with procedural knowledge, math is a perfect fit. Use these to help your students practice. Acting as both the coach and the “player” helps students interact with knowledge from different perspectives.
