Description
This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about multi-digit multiplication. In this 5-day unit, students will multiply whole numbers of up to 4 digits by a one-digit number, or multiply two digits by two digits to design a candy store. This multiplication math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it's available as both a digital and print resource.
This project-based math resource covers concepts of multi-digit multiplication and is aligned with the following 4th Grade Math Common Core State Standards:
Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
This resource is available in both Printable & Digital Google Slides versions.
What's included in this resource:
•Background Knowledge: Using a KWL, students will build background knowledge around candy store ideas and begin planning their candy store.
•Multiplication Concepts: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to multiply by one and two digit numbers, including using area models.
•Order Candy: Students will calculate the amount of candy they'd like to stock.
•Fill Candy Jars: Using multiplication concepts, students will determine how much candy to place in candy jars and dispensers.
•Create Sample Candy Bags: Using multiplication concepts, students will calculate possible options for one pound of candy.
•Create Lollipop Bundles: Using multiplication concepts, students will create custom lollipop bundles.
•Set Prices: Using multiplication concepts, students will set appropriate prices for each type of candy and calculate possible profits based on sales.
•Determine Expenses: Using multiplication concepts, students will determine how much it will cost to run the candy shop.
•Finalize Sales: Using multiplication concepts, students will calculate the total sales and profit.
•Wrap Up: Students will write up their final candy store plan and explain their decisions.
