What educators are saying

For my students who pass their pre-assessment, I assigned them this packet to work on while I remediated the rest of the students. The students loved designing their own golf courses!
Thank you for creating a great resource. We were able to use this in a way that supported the learning of our students.

Description

This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about concepts of geometry, including classifying shapes and angles. In this 5-day unit, students will use their knowledge of shapes and angles to design a mini-golf course. This geometry math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it's available as both a digital and print resource.

This project-based math resource covers concepts of geometry and is aligned with the following 4th Grade Math Common Core State Standards:

  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.G.A.1
Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.G.A.2
Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.G.A.3
Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.

This resource is available in both Printable & Digital Google Slides versions.

What's included in this resource:

•Background Knowledge: Using a KWL, students will build background knowledge around mini-golf courses and playing mini-golf.

•Geometry Concepts: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn different vocabulary for shapes and angles and apply that vocabulary.

•Lines of Symmetry: Students will learn how to find and draw lines of symmetry using various shapes.

•Classifying Triangles: Using geometry concepts, students will classify various triangles.

•Classifying Quadrilaterals: Using geometry concepts, students will classify various quadrilaterals.

•Designing a Golf Course: The students will use what they have learned about shapes and angles to design a golf course that meets specific criteria.

•Wrap Up: Students will review their decisions and discuss future considerations for their golf course.
