Math Project-Based Learning: Add & Subtract Fractions | 4th Grade

This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators In this 5-day unit, students will use their knowledge of adding and subtracting fractions to host a pie-eating contest. This math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it's available as both a digital and print resource.

This project-based math resource is aligned with the following 4th Grade Math Common Core State Standards:
Build fractions from unit fractions.

• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.B.3
  Understand a fraction a/b with a > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/b.
• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.B.3.A
  Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.
• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.B.3.B
  Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 ; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8 ; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.
• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.B.3.C
  Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NF.B.3.D
  Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.

•Background Knowledge: Using a circle map, students will build background knowledge around running a pie-eating contest.

•Fraction Concepts: Students will review fraction concepts and models.

•Joining Fractions: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn about joining fractions that refer to the same whole.

•Set Rules: Students will set rules for their pie-eating contest.

•Decompose Fractions: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to decompose fractions into a sum of unit fractions.

•Choose Flavors: Students will choose pie flavors for their contest and enlist contestants.

•Slice Pies: Using the learned concepts, students will slice each pie into equal parts and write sums to show the different ways the fraction could be decomposed.

•Add and Subtract Fractions: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators.

•Estimate Pie Needed: Using the learned concepts, students will survey their contestants to estimate how much pie will be needed in all.

•Mixed Numbers: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers.

•Make Pies: Using the learned concepts, students will make an appropriate number of pies for the contest.

•Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers: Using the included instructional pages, students will learn how to add and subtract mixed numbers.

•Contest Time: Using the learned concepts, students will run their pie-eating contest and determine a winner.

•Leftover Pie: Using the learned concepts, students will subtract to determine how much pie is leftover.

•Wrap Up: Students will write complete a wrap up activity to review fraction concepts.
