What educators are saying

I used this during tutoring sessions with a rising 5th grader. The math challenges were very engaging and challenging! These would be great in a classroom for early finishers/centers.
We have a back-to-school camp every year for our incoming 6th grade students. I needed something fun and engaging and this resource was perfect. I also plan to use it daily in my classroom as one of my station rotations!

Description

This is a collection of 52 non-routine math problems perfect to challenge your gifted and talented students or any student you want to push and/or teach perseverance. Non-Routine math problems are problems that do not have a conventional way to solve them. There can be many ways to approach these types of problems. In addition to building perseverance, they will also build critical thinking skills and expand a student’s mathematical reasoning.

Each problem comes in three different formats: 1/2 page task card, a worksheet with questions, and a strip for use with a math journal. The task card version also has a Google Slide option!

There is a variety of problem types falling mainly under numbers, logic, and spatial, so you can differentiate by the different strengths and/or weaknesses of your individual students.

This entire pack is EDITABLE. This way you can alter problems if needed or create more.

These could be used in a lot of ways - I give more specifics in the preview if you would like to know more.

I use them with my gifted learners for 3rd grade, but that is a stretch so I have designated them as 4th, 5th, and 6th. The higher the grade, the more students they will be useful for; otherwise, they are great differentiation.

The product also includes 14 pages of answers/explanations (because I really try to explain each one!)

Please download the preview to see more of the specifics.

I also have this product for younger students:

Non-routine Math Problems for Younger Students

Some of these problems are also within my morning work packs (on the challenge problem section), so if you would rather have it that way, that is another option. Specifically my 3rd grade second half of the year pack uses 17 of these problems, my entire 4th grade pack uses 19 of these problems, and my entire 5th grade pack uses 13 of these problems. As you can see, there are still a lot left to use in each grade level, but you may not need that many.

Therefore, if you would rather have one challenge problem a week that coincides with morning work, where many other skills are also practiced, you would probably be better off purchasing the morning work.

Below are the links to those three products in case you are more interested in that route:
