Matariki Art Activity Collaborative Stars
- PDF
What educators are saying
Description
A fun, collaborative art activity for your students. Designed for Matariki (the Māori New Year) however it can be used at any time. Students create one of the star sections and join it together with four others to make a complete star. They look fabulous displayed on the classroom wall.
INCLUDED
- 5 different templates. The border is designed for you with Māori patterns (eg weaving, koru, etc). Join the star pieces together with the same border, or different.
- 2 blank templates. Design your own border.
- 5 examples. These designs are inspired by Māori myths and legends, koru, kowhaiwhai patterns, etc. They are helpful to use as examples when introducing the activity. They could be used as a colouring activity if you wish.
If you are using these templates for Matariki, you could ask your students to design their star sections that reflect the dominion of the stars in the Matariki cluster. For example, 'Waitā' holds dominion over the ocean and the food sources in it. Patterns, symbols, words, pictures, etc could be used in the design that reflects this.
Designed on A4 size paper.
A great resource to have on hand during Christmas too!
