Description

Martin's Big Words is a story of courage, hope, and the perfect read aloud to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

This interactive read aloud unit includes lesson plans and encourages students to find the central message of the text, make connections to the characters, and find meaning in this impactful story.

This unit provides a comprehensive set of activities for teaching Martin's Big Words. It begins with a lesson on biographies and includes a question guide and anchor chart to support comprehension. If you don't have the book, there is a read aloud link provided.

Activity two focuses on identifying the central message of the story. Students work in groups to analyze quotes from the text and determine the life lessons conveyed.

Next, students engage with the text by identifying Martin's BIG words and creating their own impactful words.

In addition, students have the opportunity to watch Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic "I Have A Dream" speech. They can then participate in a writing activity and craft related to the speech. There is also a puzzle activity that creates a large mural of MLK Jr., perfect for displaying in the hallway alongside their speeches.

For early finishers, there is an additional research assignment called "All About MLK, Jr." This assignment allows students to delve deeper into the life and impact of Martin Luther King Jr.

Overall, this unit offers a range of engaging activities that promote comprehension, critical thinking, and creativity, while honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
