Description

Service learning projects and Martin Luther King, Jr. naturally go hand-in-hand. In Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired Service Learning Project by the2teachers you will receive a 28 page product. This product is geared towards planning, preparing and celebrating a service learning project that is developed through giving your class control and choice. You will act as the guide, while your class will take the lead. This product is aligned to the idea that MLK Day has become a day of service HOWEVER it can be used to develop a service learning project that is not related to MLK Day - you would need to make minor adjustments to a few lessons if you do not choose to connect the activities to Martin Luther King, Jr.

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THIS PRODUCT?
- 10 lesson plans
- a 1 page MLK overview biography (*this is NOT a full biography, it
is a general overview - if you are looking for an in-depth study of
of MLK's life this is not the product you are looking for)
- 11 supplemental pages (1 or more for each lesson - these include
planning pages, voting pages, group presentation assessments,
a certificate of completion, a bulletin board display option, and
more!)

WHAT AM I BUYING?
You will get 10 lesson plans with objectives, prior to the lesson ideas, introductions, activities, and closures. Each lesson has handouts to hold individuals and/or groups accountable (11 total). Lessons also include teaching tips to help you ease through setting up a service learning project.

WHAT SKILLS WILL MY KIDS BE USING?
Students will use traditional academic skills like reading and writing. They will also work on social skills like cooperation, teamwork, empathy, kindness, group planning, verbal communication, give and take, completing basic job applications, basic interviewing skills, presentation skills, assessing peers work, art integration and more!

WHY SHOULD I DO A SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT?
Research shows that students learn by doing. This project gives control, choice and accountability over to the class. You guide the students through the project, but they are taking the lead. Service learning takes abstract concepts and makes them real. This will leave a lasting impression on your students that allow them to make connections between the "academic world" and the "real world".

Please note that although there are 10 lessons included you should not equate that to 10 days of activities. Depending on the service learning project your class chooses, the project may be a short-term or a long-term project.
