What educators are saying

I liked the fact that students had to come up with a civics project on how to help people, and how they were going to be able to make their community better by doing so. I think that a lot of students' eyes were opened using this project.

Description

This awesome MLK Service Learning Project has the potential to have an amazing impact on your school community!

Many of the most amazing experiences my students have had are the result of service learning. Several years ago, I along with many other teachers began to use the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to inspire my social students students' service learning projects. This download is the result of years of having students reflect on Dr. King's legacy and their own service learning experiences.

Included is a page explaining why Martin Luther King, Jr's legacy is tied to service learning along with project ideas to help students get started planning their own personal project. These projects can be completed individually or as small groups.

The next 4 pages explain the next steps in the project:

➊ Identifying a need in the community

➋ Planning a successful project

➌ Implementing their plan

➍ Reflecting on their experience

Each page includes an introduction explaining that part of the project and several questions to help students focus on why it is important. Each also ties in Dr. King as well so that students continue to use him as their guide through the project.

Lastly, the download includes a service learning hourly log sheet and student evaluation rubric that a supervisor can complete.

The PDF includes editable form fields so you can type in how many hours you want students to complete as well as allowing students and their supervisor to type in certain information. Plus there's also a completely editable Google Doc version of the entire packet so you can change to fit whatever you need!

This can definitely make for a wonderful experience for any teacher that wants to implement service learning into your classroom.
