This passage was written with 4th graders in mind, but I feel it could be easily used as a teacher directed class reading with third graders or as a literacy center with fifth graders.

This pack includes a short close reading passage to help students better understand who Martin Luther King was and why he is an important part of history.

The passage is a half sheet, so it will work perfectly to glue sideways into an interactive reading notebook. Once glued into the interactive notebook, students can write their thinking out to the side of the passage. Remember, this is a short close reading type passage that does not touch on every part of his life. It does touch on how he was a minister, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, I Have a Dream Speech, and the Civil Rights Act. It includes vocabulary such as advocate, boycott, segregate, and more.

In addition to the passage, there are three flippable activities (all printed on one sheet) for their notebook. One is on the definition of segregate, one focuses the I Have a Dream speech, and the other focuses on four comprehension questions related to the text.

In addition to doing this activity as a whole group reading lesson, you could also have students do it during a literacy center. Feel free to use it in your classroom however you would like.
