Description

Dr. MLK Jr was an inspiring hero! Perfect for January, Martin Luther King Jr Day, or Black History Month / African-American History Month, this resource provides you with two reading passages, comprehension questions formatted like the AIR test, and a thought-provoking writing activity. The Martin Luther King Jr writing activity requires students to write their own "I Have a Dream" speech, relevant to the changes they want to see in the world!

I have found that it's good to familiarize the kids with AIR test verbiage, along with modeling how to answer these specific questions, so they aren't confused when the time comes. The writing activity prompts students to brainstorm about how they want to help other or change the world. The end product is their own "I Have a Dream" essay with an essay topper they can decorate.

Why you need this writing activity

Not only does it familiarize students with the format and verbiage of the AIR test, it is a critical thinking activity that inspires them to think about what they can do in the world. They think of their own dream of helping others, so they apply what they're learning to real life. It is important for students to think about things like this and feel like they can make a difference.
