Description

Product Description: If you are in need of an organized, easy to understand set of notes that teaches how changes in the trade winds create either El Nino, or La Nina, and how each of these influence climate and the Peruvian anchoveta, this is a great resource to have. I use this with my marine regular / honors crowd. Here's how this 48 slide PPT lecture would work:

  • Begin the lecture with a link to investigate the current ENSO status, found on slide 3 here (this is updated every few days). This is a good activating strategy as it peaks interest in the kids (we are under a La Nina now) and it gets them wondering what is that, what does it mean?
  • Lecture the remaining 9 total slides (there are much more than 9, it's just that I used the slides themselves to add animations to enhance learning so it's really 28 slides) to teach the kids about normal, El Nino, and La Nina conditions and how each influence climate and the anchovy. For the visual learners short video clips are embedded to show what is being learned. Hand drawn graphics are also used to again enhance student understanding of a very obtuse topic to them.
  • Lecture the last 6 slides about El Nino, La Nina, how it influences your area. The slides are set for NE Florida, so if your conditions are the same there is no editing needed. I also have drawings here to explain how El Nino and La Nina impact hurricane formation, and I clearly show how a busy La Nina hurricane season is caused not by La Nina, but by the oceans warming temperature.
*If you and your kids are in a different area you'll need to edit these slides to be area specific. To do that, and to match the font I used (Indie Flower) you'd need to upload the resource to your google drive, open it with slides, and edit it that way.

* If you use this resource to flip your classroom and create a video lecture out of this, that is okay. However, that video cannot not be posted to an open public source, such as YouTube. That would be a violation of the DCMA, it can be posted as a video file to a secure LMS, such as schoology, were only students can access it. TY for understanding! - Chris
