Description

Looking for fun and engaging reading activities to celebrate March Madness? Look no further than The Basketball Madness Snack Showdown.

It's the day of the exciting March Madness party, and everyone in the class is gathered to watch the basketball game together. But right before the game starts, the special snacks that always come to the party have disappeared! They were the snack that everyone looks forward to, and now they’re gone! Can you help the class figure out who has stolen them?

To complete the mystery of the missing snacks your students will work in small groups, use their detective notes, and solve language and reading tasks to catch the culprit and recover the stolen snacks.

Clue #1 (homonyms) – Some words have multiple meanings. Sort each riddle to the matching homonym. Whoever has the homonym with a missing riddle did not take the snacks.

Clue #2 (vowel sounds) – Each word has a different vowel sound. Sort the words to the correct suspect. Whoever has the most words did NOT steal the snacks!

Clue #3 (abc order puzzle) – The puzzle shows a suspect who did NOT take the snacks. Work with your team to put the pieces together correctly. Hint: The words will help you solve the puzzle!

Clue #4 (Sequence of Events) – Read the text to learn how to make a Slam Dunk Snack. Whoever has the steps in order is NOT the snack thief.

Clue #5 (key details) – Read the text to learn all about the history of March Madness! The suspect with the CORRECT key detail did not take the snack.

After unraveling the mystery, you might want to let your students follow the instructions from the "Slam Dunk Snack" passage to make a simple but tasty basketball treat.

*You can have the materials prepped and ready to go. OR, if you don't feel like prepping you can print on white paper and students can do the cutting and sorting as they solve each task.
