This is a four lesson unit by Reading Through History.
The first lesson documents the life, achievements, and controversies surrounding the civil rights leader Malcolm X.
The second lesson covers the rise and fall of the Black Panther Party during the civil rights era. The lesson includes the reasons for the founding of the organization, the roles it played in the major cities, the controversies surrounding the group, and the leadership roles of Bobby Seale, Huey P. Newton, and Eldridge Cleaver.
The third lesson describes the Black Power movement and the role it played during the civil rights era.
The fourth lesson covers the Watts Riot which occurred in August of 1965. This includes the causes, costs, and impact of the riots.
Each lesson is followed by three pages of student activities. The student activities include multiple choice questions, a student response essay question, a guided reading activity, and vocabulary activities. There is enough material to cover around two hours of class.
