Description

As caring adults we know that one of the most distressing problems that our students and children face is the inability to make and maintain friendships. So often what happens between children is out of our direct view and we only hear about what is happening when there are problems. This resource gives us concrete skills to teach to children, the context to practice skills, and positive language and illustrations so children feel successful at every step of the way. Clear, consistent visual expectations, previously rehearsed scenarios, and specific accommodations help children easily make friends! Designed specifically for students on the spectrum, as well as for children with ADHD, anxiety disorder, and intellectual challenges, this product also has applications for the shy or new child within a given setting.

This resource is flexible to meet the current skill level and abilities of your student. A separate PowerPoint file is easily editable so that you have the opportunity to make your own individualized book pages to match your child's needs. You are able to personalize the cover by adding your student’s name and picture, and you can add pages to match the unique circumstances that are important to your student.

Social stories are the most effective methods of teaching new skills to many special needs children. The use of social stories is judged by teachers to be either somewhat effective or highly effective at 97% (Reynhout, G. & Carter, M. 2009). But because individualized and comprehensive social stories are so time consuming and difficult to make, they are often left on the to-do list! With this product I have included a specific sequence of social skills and made them readily available and accessible to parents, special education teachers, and occupational and speech/language therapists.

The detailed table of contents enhances ease of use. Just read the table of contents and pick the pages you need to print. You choose the cover and pages that fit the needs and issues your boy is dealing with now. When printing two identical books are make so that one can be shared with another important adult to help with the generalizing of new skills. Making Friends Social Stories includes:

Teacher’s Guide, 5 pages and includes 10 sample IEP goals.
