Description

This 9 slide Math Activ Studio flipchart teaches students to make and use pictographs to compare information. This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 4.3 - 1st grade, although it can be used to teach concepts in grades K-4. This lesson begins with the “Problem of the Day” in which students are given a word problem that uses critical thinking to determine the number of teeth the students in the class lost. The students can use the visual manipulatives on the Promethean Board to check their answer. Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews vocabulary term(s) needed to understand the content of the lesson: pictograph. Next, the students will review the pictograph made from the previous lesson, of the class favorite enrichment: PE or art to review how to read a pictograph. Next, there are two videos embedded into the flipchart for the students to watch on making pictographs (if your software support the viewing of the video). Next the students will make a pictograph with counters based on the data given, after they have completed the teachers asks questions about the results of the graph (side notes included in flipchart). The next slide puts students on a barn to make a pictograph with the barn animals, the teacher can use this opportunity to review the data with tally marks as well. The next page gives a higher order thinking review and closure question to check for students’ understanding of the lesson taught in which they must solve a graph problem and figure out how to use the graph to answer the question. The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). The last page gives a math journal entry in which students are to create their own pictograph and must use pictures and words to explain the graph.
