Description
Combine music and engineering with this engaging group challenge! In this lesson, students will collaborate to make their own wind chimes. They will select from everyday materials to construct a wind chime that makes a pleasant sound when blown by the wind. They will learn about pitch and vibrations along the way.
Each group will try at least three different configurations that will lead them to their final design. This teaches kids how to iterate their design solutions.
After each group finalizes their design, students will come together for a class discussion, where they will share their creations. Through this discussion, students will gain valuable insights into the various approaches taken by their peers, discovering what worked well and what didn't. This reflective process fosters critical thinking, communication, and teamwork.
In addition to the hands-on activity, this resource includes a student instructions sheet, a student response sheet, extension activities, and resources that provide opportunities for further exploration. We hope you enjoy seeing (and hearing!) the innovative designs your students come up with!
