Description

This main idea and supporting details activity is based on our "Legend and History of the Chinese New Year" rap song. This resource includes multiple-choice questions, a graphic organizer, a turn-and-talk activity, and a fiction and nonfiction passage.

Students will listen to the song then use the song lyrics as a reading passage to identify the main idea and its supporting details for various sections of the lyrics. Additional activities are detailed below.

The song for this activity tells the legend of the Chinese New Year and explores the history behind the celebration.

Accommodate your students using audio!

Do you teach EL/ESL or SPED students/SWDs? Have them use the song as a read-aloud with subtitles. Students can also slow down the song to make listening and comprehension easier. Instructions are embedded into the Google Form activity for students.

This resource includes:

- the Google Form link for copying the activity to your Google Drive

- the song with subtitles embedded into the Google Form

- self-grading quiz format with the answer key

- 1 main idea and supporting details, graphic organizer writing activity with 3 sections

- 6 multiple-choice, identify the main idea questions with the answer key

- 3 multiple-choice, identify the supporting details questions with the answer key

- 1 "Main Idea on Beast Mode!" challenge activity where students will identify the main idea of the entire song using their main idea and supporting details graphic organizer

- 1 Turn and Talk, discussion activity that challenges students to identify and discuss connections between other legends and histories.

How to use this resource:

- Read and discuss the "What's the Main Idea?" section of the activity on page 1 with students.

- Have students preview the song lyrics on pages 3 and 4 to understand how the song lyrics are sectioned.

- Play the song and have students follow along with the lyrics or have them work independently.

- Pause the song after Verse 1A is finished if completing as a class.

- Complete the graphic organizer on page 1 together as a class for Verse 1A. Ask students for supporting details to complete the graphic organizer. Brainstorm together as a class to summarize the main idea as one sentence based on the chosen supporting details.

- Play the remainder of the song and have students complete the remaining graphic organizer activities. Review student answers as a class when students are finished.

- Have students complete the remaining activities listed above. Review as needed or refer students to the instructions on page 1 for help.
