Description

Do your students need more practice identifying the main idea of a passage? Spiral back to this topic during the month of December with these main idea practice worksheets! Your students will read four passages related to December holidays (one for Hanukkah, one for Saint Lucia Day, and two for Christmas). For each passage, they will answer two multiple-choice questions.

  • The first question is "Which of the following sentences best states the main idea of the passage?"
  • The second question is "Which would be the best title for this passage?"

These worksheets provide an excellent way to keep your students engaged during the month of December while still working toward proficiency in identifying the main idea! Using these worksheets will also help your students feel prepared when they encounter similar main idea questions on standardized tests.

I have found that my students struggle with this type of question on multiple-choice tests because in some ways it is somewhat subjective what the best title would be. Therefore, I included a DETAILED ANSWER KEY that explains why a certain answer is the best title for the passage.

********This resource is available in three formats:

  1. Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute the pencil-and-paper worksheet.
  2. Easel Activity- With this paperless format, an interactive layer has been added to the original PDF! Students can complete this activity on a device. Students read each paragraph and answer each multiple-choice question. Students move the circles to select their answers.
  3. Easel Assessment- Students complete this self-grading quiz on a device, as well. After reading a passage, students select the main idea or best title from a list of four possible answer choices. With this option, the teacher chooses whether or not his or her students receive immediate feedback.
