To provide flexibility, for use in distance learning and/or a classroom setting, the following options are offered:

Throughout this bundle, each passage is presented twice.

In the first version, students read the passage and then answer two multiple choice questions and one short answer question. The first multiple choice question with each passage asks about main idea. The second multiple choice question consistently asks about a supporting detail. The short answer (written response) questions include topics such as author’s purpose and distinguishing fact from detail.

In the second version, students identify, underline and then write the main idea. They then complete a simple graphic organizer by filling in three supporting details. (A full page version of this graphic organizer is also included.)

The Main Idea Reading Comprehension passages increase in complexity throughout this bundle.

To supplement the traditional reading passages, 30 Build and Learn Main Idea Houses are included, along with a blank template so students can make their own.

As students build these houses, they literally see that the details (walls) support the main idea (roof). Students also do a little cutting and a bit of visual work.

*No glue or tape is required.*

Building these main idea houses helps make the idea of a main idea and supporting details concrete.
