Are you looking for an engaging way to teach Virginia Studies? You've found it!

This Virginia Studies reading passage is based on a Maggie Walker rap song that teaches students about the Virginia Studies SOL .9D - identifying the political, social, and/or economic contributions made by Maggie Lena Walker, the first female bank president and famous 20th Century Virginian.

This activity includes:

- the song lyrics for use as a reading passage

- instructions for accessing the song for students to listen to with subtitles

- short-response, comprehension questions with the answer key

- extension activities for expanding student knowledge that are detailed below.

How to use this activity:

- Students will preview the questions on page 1 then listen to the song on YouTube while following along with the lyrics on page 2.

- Students will then answer the questions on page 1.

- When students are done, they can continue to be engaged by completing the extension activities on page 3.

- The extension activities include:

  • a compare and contrast, discussion prompt for partner activity
  • an inferencing, discussion prompt for partner activity
  • a Women's history, discussion prompt for partner activity
  • and instructions for students to use the song's instrumental for writing their own songs about Maggie Walker.

- The answer key for page 1 is located on page 4.
