Overview: This Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade Scavenger Hunt is an engaging activity that incorporates not only reading comprehension, but also problem solving and critical thinking skills. It also includes a scavenger hunt aspect, where students will be eager to complete the task so that they can unscramble a mystery word.

Instead of hunting for locations around your classroom, students will be hunting for answers that are “code words” across the ten reading passage cards. Students will revisit the non-fiction text cards multiple times, practicing reading comprehension skills as they move around the room looking for text evidence.

This lesson includes 10 short nonfiction reading passages, a mission, and a final mystery word. Each card reveals a new code word. The correct code word is found on a different card in the passage so that students have to follow the task card trail to find the answers.

How does it work? Students choose any reading card to start at and they will read the passage. They will then read the question at the bottom of the card labeled “code word”. The code word for THAT number will lead them to a different card. But here’s the catch… students will not know where to find the answer so they will have to visit, browse, and revisit clue cards and reading passages several times to find the answer they are seeking. The more times students read or skim the passage, the greater chances of the information sinking in!
