Description

Middle and high school students need practice with close reading and questions that require text-based answers.

This close reading exercise works beautifully as a whole-class activity, but it works just as well for students working in pairs or small groups and even as a homework assignment.

The key to what makes this activity successful is the use of graphic organizers. Each question is followed by a table that enables students to identify relevant details and discuss what they mean. Try it and then facilitate a conversation around student answers. This is a great first step toward writing an essay.
