Originally included in HABIT 2 of the 7 Habits Bundle, this Mark the Text and Socratic Seminar Activity students will listen to Martin Luther King's Speech "Life's Blueprint" before reading and marking up a portion of the speech to use for discussion. The slides are editable and encourage posting discussion questions on their virtual discussion board (we use schoology) or you can just have students come to the next period with their questions to verbally discuss. I like to do both as it provides an opportunity for quiet students to engage in discourse in written format on the board and is good practice for higher education.
This lesson can be stretched to more than one class period, especially if you choose to give students a written reflection activity after discussion (not included).
