My Personal Teacher Story

When I first started teaching the Lucy Calkins Units of Study, my challenges were many and my answers were few–primarily because I hadn’t read the books. So, I immediately set out on a reading quest to make the most of this new and awesome curriculum by reading while building lessons for my students. While balancing school, work outside of work, quality family time, and unexpected daily events, I struggled to become the loving teacher that I dreamed would make me a kid’s hero.

Who was I to try to be a hero–and at the same time become a great teacher of Lucy Calkins Units of Study–while nurturing my life outside of school? I think you may know what I mean. As teachers, we all understand sacrifice and experience it daily. We are called to our profession and sometimes struggle to get it all done. I want to encourage you that you are not alone in feeling overwhelmed as a teacher.

But, I also want to encourage you by telling you that I am thankful for being able to use the fantastic Lucy Calkins Units of Study! When I first started teaching, my students were not half the readers they became after I started teaching the Lucy Calkins Units of Study! Later, as I moved to other grade levels and used my products to implement the Lucy Calkins Units of Study, I saw my students’ test scores increase across the board.

But, it was so much more than test scores. Once I started using my products in conjunction with the units themselves, I started feeling amazing because it made it super easy to present each lesson, and my lesson plans were already done. The kids were engaged. I was organized. I felt like the hero I had dreamed of becoming.
