What educators are saying

I had used Mr. E's products for years and when I went back into the classroom for summer school I was excited to use activities I hadn't had a chance to try yet. Some of the primary sources were more difficult for my ESL students but we worked through them together and the students were successful.
I have used this for multiple years with my AP US History class. I treat it like a DBQ; it allows students to draw conclusions based on a variety of sources.

---------------------

In this highly engaging lesson, students use a collection of 11 primary source documents to understand the intricacies of the Louisiana Territory and the Louisiana Purchase.

This activity is set as a "modern day" FBI/CIA activity where the United States is considering purchasing land from Canada. However, the students help is needed to make sure they don't make the same mistakes of the past. Therefore, students have to thoroughly investigate the only other land deal of this magnitude - the Louisiana Purchase. Students are given 4 key questions that will be answered by a close and thorough use of the documents:

1.) What did President Jefferson want when he purchased the Louisiana Territory?

2.) How did Jefferson ultimately end up purchasing the entire Louisiana Territory, and under what terms?

3.) Once acquired, what did Jefferson want done with the area? Were these aims successful?

4.) What controversies arouse regarding Jefferson’s purchase of the Louisiana Territory?

This activity is always a hit with collaborative learning groups!
