What is included?

Powerpoint Presentation: This powerpoint presentation is intended to be projected on your interactive board throughout the unit. It includes 9 lessons/experiments and allows your students to come up to the board and show you what they know by choosing the answers they believe are correct.

1.) SOLIDS: Students will learn the definition of a solid and choose which items are solids on the interactive board.

Worksheet: Students define solids and then choose which item is a solid based on the scientific definition. Students will also find 4 solids in the classroom.

2.) LIQUIDS: Students will define a liquid and choose which items are liquids on the interactive board.

Worksheet: students will define liquids and then choose which item is a liquid based on the scientific definition. Students will also find 4 liquids in the classroom.

3.) GASES: Students will learn the definition of a gas and choose which items are gases on the interactive board.

Worksheet: Students define gases and then choose which items are gases based on the scientific definition. Students will also find 4 gases in the classroom.

4.) CLASSIFY THE OBJECTS: Students will review definitions of solids, liquids and gases. Then they will choose which items are solids liquids and gases on the interactive board.

Activity: Cut and paste various items into the categories Solids, Liquids and Gases.

5.) SOLIDS MELT: Teacher shows the students photos and detailed explanations of how a snowman, chocolate chips, ice cream, marshmallows, and ice can change their state of matter.

Worksheet: Students explain the process of melting for three different solids. Finally, they choose their own solid and explain how they can make it melt.

6.) A WET AND SNOWY DAY A Science and Literacy Activity: Read a story about a silly aunt who babysits her two nephews on a wet and snowy day. The story includes various solids, liquids and gases as well as examples of changing the state of matter.

Worksheet: Students locate solids, liquids and gases throughout the story, name the characters and setting, explain if the story is real/fantasy, write the main idea and answer some Scientific True and False questions.

7.) FREEZING EXPERIMENT: Students learn what it freeze means and how it affects a liquid. This experiment is a 2 day experiment where groups of students put one of four different liquid in ice tray containers and freeze overnight.

Worksheet: For each day the students will observe, draw, and describe the different properties of the liquid their group is using.

8.) NOODLE EXPERIMENT: Students receive a noodle and discuss it's properties. Either in the class or at home they are to put it in boiling water. After 15 minutes they are to discuss the changes in it's properties.

Worksheet: Students observe, draw and discuss the properties of the noodle prior to boiling as well as after.

9.) REVIEW GAME/RECORDING SHEET: This review game consists of 12 interactive questions focusing on the various states of matter and how it can change its property or remain the same. It is intended to be played on the interactive board. To keep all students accountable there is a recording sheet where they can record their answers.

1 Three Page Multiple Choice and Open Response Assessment. This Assessment has 12 questions. Questions 1-11 are on level questions. Open Response Question 12 is a higher level question and intended to help the teacher grade higher performing students accurately on their Standards Based Report Card.
