Description

A perfect way to introduce students to the world of live sound recording, audio engineering and electronic composition! This exciting project guides students in the process of recording live sound and then organizing those sounds into an original electronic music composition using a DAW of your choosing.

Using the work of 21st Century composer Joseph Bertolozzi and his composition "Tower Music" as a model, this project gives students the chance to record sounds in their surrounding environment with the goal of organizing them into a cohesive piece of music.

The project can be completed using any DAW, and the document includes helpful tricks and tips for using the free platform BandLab to complete this project. Students can use personal devices to record the desired sounds, or any microphones and interfaces available. Once the sounds are recorded, students then edit and organize the sounds in the DAW to create an original composition.

This project spans roughly 10-15 class periods and can be used for any variety of general music, music technology, music theory, or music ensemble courses.

The zip file contains the Project Outline and BandLab Tips and Tricks in both .pdf and editable .docx file formats.

The project follows the NAfME Music Standards for Listening, Responding, Creating & Connecting.


Note-The website Padlet works well as a place for students to compile their work for each section.  “A Student Guide to Creating a Padlet” is a great resource to help students set up and use Padlet.

BandLab works on a variety of student devices and is compatible with Windows & Mac OS.
