What educators are saying

This is an extremely helpful set of sentence stems for students to reference as they are writing about each element. I believe this will be very helpful for students as they begin to analyze literature and help them to deepen their understanding of each concept. Thank you!

Description

Immerse your students in the language of literary elements, and improve their essay writing skills!

When my students were having difficulty translating their knowledge of literary elements into their essay writing, I typed up this series of posters with signal phrases for each literary element and device. Then I stapled them to individual sheets of construction paper, and taped them to the walls of my classroom. By the time I was done, my class was fully "print-riched" with a multi-color display that served as a constant reference point during in-class essay writing. Students who weren't sure how to express their understanding of satire or allegory knew that they could look up at the walls of our classroom, identify a relevant signal phrase, and break right through their writing block.

Included in this poster packet are signal phrases and definitions for the following literary elements and devices: characterization, conflict, figurative language, perspective, setting, irony, satire, symbolism, allegory, juxtaposition, and personification. These signal phrases are designed to encourage students both to incorporate academic language into their writing, and to express how the element or device effects the reader or the meaning of the text.

I introduced these posters at the beginning of the semester, and immediately noticed huge improvements in my students' written analysis. Download these posters today, and you could see improvements by the end of the week!

Directions for making a colorful literary element and signal phrase display on your wall:
-print the 57 pages of the packet on single-sided sheets of paper with a standard printer
-staple each sheet to a colorful piece of construction paper to make a poster
-tape each poster to the wall of your classroom in orderly columns and rows (the signal phrases are grouped by literary element, so try to keep the sequence intact)
-wait for gasps of astonishment when your students walk in the next day!

Alternatively, make a great review packet for your kids by following these steps:
- change the printer settings so you are printing 6 pages of the packet on each sheet of paper
- also, to save paper, print double-sided
- after printing the packets, staple the upper left corner of each, and distribute them to your students so they can use these signal phrases while writing essays in the comfort of their homes!
