What educators are saying

This was such a fun activity to do with my 5th graders in the beginning of the year! It got them so excited to learn about different genres.

Description

This is a fun activity I use on the first day of Middle School General Music!

I play 15 different short listening examples - I personally use a playlist from my iTunes, but you could use a CD, youtube, etc.

Students listen to the short clip and then choose which style it fits in best. I encourage students to take a guess and not worry about getting every answer correct. General music is about exploration and keeping an open mind! Notice that ere are 17 blanks and only 15 examples, so 2 will not be used (OR, you could play 19 examples - that way they use all of them!)

Make sure to make a note of the order in which you played the clips! After students have finished listening, use their answers for a class discussion and have students turn in their paper as a participation grade.

**This worksheet is a perfect intro to using my General Music Styles Word Wall: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Musical-Styles-Rainbow-Word-Wall-Bulletin-Board-Half-sheet-size-2629946

Here are the music examples I use:

Bluegrass: Chris Thile and Michael Daves, "My Little Girl in Tennessee"
Blues: Muddy Waters, "Mannish Boy"
Chant: Benedictine Monks, "Dies Irae"
Classical : Beethoven's 5th Symphony
Country: Dolly Parton, "Jolene"
Disco: Bee Gees, "You should be dancing"
Funk: Parliament, " Flashlight"
Heavy Metal: Metallica, "Enter Sandman"
Movie Soundtrack: Theme from "Pirates of the Caribbean"
Musical Theater: Hamilton, "The room where it happens"
Opera: Rigoletto, "La Dona e mobile"
Pop: Fifth Harmony, "Bo$$"
R&B: Alicia Keys, "Fallin"
Rap: I have 2 examples, depending on my mood :) "My Shot" from Hamilton or "Lean and Dab" by IheartMemphis
Reggae: Bob Marley, "One Love"
Rock: Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Sweet Home Alabama"
Techno: I don't have the name, but it's just an instrumental from youtube
