Description

Have some fun in math! Sink the golf ball in one shot by providing the correct linear function. Watch the golf ball slide across the screen. Students will be completely engaged!

Topics: Linear Functions, Rules, Linear Equations, Coordinate Graphing, Slope Intercept Form

Students will be absolutely engaged when they work through these linear functions as they play miniature golf. All students in the class are to record their rule on the answer sheet. Once all students have recorded their answers, start calling on students to see who has the correct rule. Have that student come to the board and explain the rule. Once the student has explained the rule, that student can advance the PowerPoint so that the golf ball sinks into the golf hole. Great shot and great explanation!

There are two courses: the Silver Course (18 Holes - Novice) and the Gold Course (18 Holes - Professional). The Gold Course is more advanced and often does not have a large portion of the line so that students must visualize the rest of the line to be able to come up with the rule.

This math activity can be made into a game in a number of ways. One suggestion is to break the class into two teams. One member of Team A is called upon to give the rule. If this member gets it correct, the team gets to answer the next problem as well. If answered correctly, this team continues. If answered incorrectly, the next team gets to answer. Continue play back and forth between the teams until all 18 holes have been played.

All students are to participate. On each student's answer sheet, each student is to record what they think is the rule. Once the correct answer has been revealed, the student is to circle Yes if they had the correct rule or No if they had the incorrect rule. This will provide a quick assessment as to student progress with the skills.

Playing miniature golf is a fun way to engage the students. The connection between the miniature golf game and linear functions makes this math concept come to life.

Have some fun in math!
