Description
A fun, seasonal cut-and-paste activity to help children understand the life cycle of a Christmas (evergreen coniferous) tree from seed, to sapling, to the adult tree and seed cones. A hands-on cross between a winter science worksheet and a craft!
Use this activity for interactive science notebooks, or to support a unit on plants/trees, life cycles, or Christmas traditions/celebrations.
Print the templates you require on letter-sized paper or card.
The differentiated options
There are 6 options to allow you to differentiate for your students or to use with different age groups:
- Template 1: Color the Christmas tree and its life cycle stages, cut out the labels, match them to the pictures, glue, and fold.
- Template 2: As above, but with a simpler cutting edge around the Christmas tree.
- Template 3: Color the Christmas tree and its life cycle stages, cut out and sequence the stages, glue, and fold.
- Template 4: The same as template 3, but with a simpler cutting edge.
- Template 5: Color the tree, write the life cycle stages on the lines, cut, and fold.
- Template 6: The same as template 5, but with a simpler cutting edge.
Once complete, students can open their foldout to reveal the 4 life cycle stages inside.
Directions for students, including how to fold are included.
Benefits of this activity
- Low prep
- Children learn about the Christmas tree life cycle in a fun and hands-on way, that’s a bit different from a standard science worksheet.
- Can be used to introduce the life cycle, or as a review/assessment to check understanding.
- Encourages fine motor/scissor skills, hand-eye coordination (folding), and sequencing.
- Differentiated options allow multiple age ranges or abilities to do the same activity.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐This was an easy go-to activity that required very little prep-time. I left this as an activity for my substitute teacher to do with students. They were excited to show me the finished product when I came back and I have to say it turned out really cute!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐This was an excellent product! It went along perfectly with our Christmas tree lifecycle lessons. It was extremely easy to prep and the finished product looked awesome! My students and I loved it!!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐We used this when we took a virtual field trip to the Christmas Tree Farm and my kids LOVED it. It was a great "souvenir" for them to remember the experience.
