Teaching Tips:
- Students will work in small groups searching the library for authors, titles, subjects or biographies that meet the instructions on the clipboard pages. For younger children, books can be pre-selected and placed on tables. These activities can also be used as an individual assignment when appropriate.
- If you are having the class work on one skill (ex. Author), then color-code small groups of 3 or 4. Put a laminated colored clipboard onto a real clipboard and send the group on their way. At the end of the time period, blue clipboard group checks purple clipboard group, and so on.
- If you are reviewing all skills, then give groups all the same color clipboard but with different words. This will spread the class around the library and allow you to differentiate the difficulty level. One group gets SUBJECT, one TITLE, etc.
- Limit the areas to be ‘browsed’. For example, send some groups only to the E fiction area and others only to the F fiction areas for author work. Or have some groups start with the last letter and work backwards.
- Have clipboards available for a student to use with a mentor when they are in the library.
- Use the blank clipboards and write a student’s name, teacher’s name, or other library words to find authors, titles, or subjects to give variety of letters used.
- Use the activity with only the online catalog in a computer center.
