What educators are saying

Excellent resource for distance learning in my virtual classroom. Appreciate the hardwork and creativity.
I wish I had this in the beginning of the year to add on to as I went, however, the students quickly caught on to what the number above the letter stood for. They are doing amazing at reciting the sounds in unison!

When used correctly, letter cards are incredibly effective in helping students master phoneme grapheme relationships. I start my small group lesson every day with a quick review of all previously taught skills using this resource. Once prepped, this resource will allow you to teach, reteach, and review phoneme grapheme relationships effectively and efficiently all year long. ***Continuous review of early literacy skills helps students master each spelling pattern and the sound(s) each pattern spells!

This resource includes two sets of high-frequency word cards with irregular spellings (commonly referred to as Heart Words). Set #1 allows students to practice reading words that include irregular letter-sound relationships. The irregular phoneme-grapheme pattern(s) in each word are underlined for quick identification. This helps strengthen orthographic mapping, which is the key to fluent word recognition and identification! Set #2 includes words without any prompting or underlining, which is perfect for scaffolding students as they progress.

In his book Equipped for Reading Success (2016), Dr. David Kilpatrick describes best practice in helping students store words in their “sight” word memory. Kilpatrick calls this process Orthographic Mapping. When a word is permanently “mapped,” students can automatically retrieve it without thinking. He goes on to say that “To be good orthographic mappers, children need to develop three skills: 1) Automatic letter-sound associations, 2) highly proficient phoneme awareness, and 3) word study” (p. 41). Essentially, word study is the unconscious or conscious process of connecting the phonemes (sounds) to the written form of the word (Kilpatrick, 2016). Kilpatrick continues, “The word-study aspect of mapping is the superglue that anchors words into permanent memory” (p. 41).

Providing explicit instruction through word study is a great way to improve your student’s ability to successfully orthographically map words.

Here's some examples of how I use this resource in my classroom...

I use the phoneme cards and the "words with irregular spelling" flashcards EVERY day in my small group as part of my Orton-Gillingham lessons! I start each group with a review of previously taught phonics skills. For example, I quickly flip through each card as students produce the corresponding sound.

Next, we practice blending. For example, I place all beginning blends first, then vowels, and finally ending blends or consonants (depending on the skill). Students then point to each card while producing the corresponding sound. Finally, they blend all the sounds together to read the word. I love using nonsense words too because it forces students to apply each skill directly. We repeat this process until all cards have been used.

We do the same with "Heart Words" (words with irregular spellings that students must memorize by heart) .

I use the digital phoneme cards and word cards to kick off my whole group literacy block every day, too! Find me on Instagram and TikTok to see my review routine in action!
