Let's Learn Position Words

This Math Activ Studio flipchart for Promethean Board teaches students how to give and follow directions about the position and location of objects in space. This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 8.1 - 1st grade. This lesson begins with the "Problem of the Day" in which students must use critical thinking to solve a word problem about ordering of numbers. Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then introduces vocabulary terms needed to understand the concepts of the lesson: over, under, left, right, and between, including shapes as visual to demonstrate each term. Next, a scene is displayed with direction words in which students must demonstrate what is over, under, left, right, and between. The next page displays another scene in which students are asked to take out their markerboards (or paper) and the teach names an object on the screen and students must write the position word of where the object is located. There is also a video attached (if your system permits) on position words. The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). Last, the students are given a math journal prompt which they must draw a shape and write the position words to the correct places around the shape.
