Description

Before successfully managing anger, many students/clients will first need to develop the ability to recognize their temper before it has reached explosive levels. One common and effective strategy for improving emotional awareness is by recording relevant events in an Anger Journal. 

This resource is a useful tool you can use to:

  • help kids recognize their triggers, frequency of feeling angry, and underlying feeling states.
  • help kids understand that anger is a secondary emotion; that underneath or before feeling mad you have other feelings such as fear, hurt, or frustration.
  • support your students/clients to gain awareness and be better able to develop ways to best channel their angry energy. Plus they will experience more resilience.

In the past, I avoided using anger logs or journals. Not because I didn't see their clinical value, but because it often turned out to be an uphill battle to get kids to be on board with this sort of assignment. It's not hard to understand why. I often find that there is a lot of shame interwoven with the anger issues, and kids don't want to reinhabit that situation and reflect on what happened. 

However, somewhere along the way, I realized that kids were much more inclined to keep their journals if I included some extra assignments. It broke the monotony of filling the same page over and over again. Furthermore, the additional prompts are a great way to help kids increase their self-awareness, and learn more about anger and ways to manage this big emotion.

This Anger Journal includes 31 CBT anger log pages. Kids are required, in age-appropriate language, to list their triggers, label their feelings, identify the physical cues of anger, register their thoughts, and prompted to reflect on another way of managing a similar situation in the future.

It also includes 15 additional worksheets (24 pages in total) detailing topics like:

-anger cues;

-strengths identification;

-coping skills (breathing exercises; guided muscular relaxation; gratitude; etc.)

- the constructive functions of anger feelings

- and much more!

This resource includes both color and ink-friendly copies.

You can use this resource whole, as an anger journal, or you could use specific worksheets to support learning and self-awareness during sessions.
