Description
Now that we have learned how to place the free modifiers after, before, and within the main clause, we move to the most common free modifier, the present participle.
Students will learn where to place it in the sentence, and how to get the most out of its usefulness. See how many they can put in one sentence (see the Harper Lee example!) and have them pick up any book in the library and time themselves how long it takes to find one. They can then submit their findings to the whole class, and have a great discussion the next day.
Be aware, however, that they might be mistaken and have collected gerunds or main verbs. Not to worry, though, as the next set of lessons clarify that, along with the use of commas (crucial) and the importance of placement of the phrase.
The exercise at the end will ask them to write their own present participial phrases. This will probably be the first time they have ever done it actually knowing what they are doing. This is where joy and confidence start building, and it happens throughout the course. As a teacher, it's a great feeling.
