What educators are saying

Such a great resource! It is difficult to find middle school aged resources that are fun but not too challenging. We completed this activity in small groups of 3-4. This was a great way to end our Lenten unit and send the kids off on their Easter break. A challenging activity, but a good challenge!

Description

Use these five Catholic Lent mini escape rooms to learn about Lent and prepare for Easter. Questions include numbers related to Lent; people, places, and events associated with Lent; common Lenten words to unscramble; Scripture passages frequently used during Lent; and identification of stations of the cross. Use them consecutively in one or two class periods or on five different days for great review during Lent!

The five mini escape rooms include the following:

➢ eight task cards with anywhere from three to five questions per card

➢ student instructions for both Google and teacher-led facilitation

➢ answer key

➢ link to make a copy of the Google form

The mini escape rooms will take anywhere from 15-40 minutes depending on your students’ familiarity with Lenten terms and whether you allow them to use the Internet and/or a Bible to determine answers. Plan on more than one class period if planning to complete escape rooms consecutively. Specific descriptions of the escape rooms are below, and the escape rooms are listed in order of difficulty from least challenging to most challenging.

❶ Stations of the Cross

Students will identify which station is which and order them from first to fifteenth. There are five cards with three identifications and three cards with five stations to order.

** Please note these task cards include the Resurrection as the 15th station

❷ People, Places, Things

Students will match a description of a person, place or event to that person, place or event. There are four people, places, or events per card for 32 total descriptions.

❸ Unscramble

Students will unscramble three Lenten terms per card for 24 total unscrambled words.

❹ Scripture

Students will fill in the blank with a word to complete the Scripture verse. There are three verses per card for 24 total verses. Passages are taken from the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops website.

❺ Numbers

Students will determine the number related to a variety of Lenten questions. There are four questions per card for 32 total questions.

In the Google-led facilitation (a quicker version), students input answers into a Google Form and are automatically told if their code is correct for each card and awarded one or more letters toward the secret phrase.

In teacher-led facilitation (a lengthier version), teachers will check answers for students and award letters toward the secret phrase.
