Learning with ROOT 01: lights, moving, and turning

ROOT already comes with a great app that will guide you through the lessons, but if you want a lesson guide/presentation to guide teachers and students, look no further.

We have created a super fun and interactive that you can then integrate into your class, this will be exactly what you need.

In this presentation we cover how to setup the robot, along with lessons 1.1-1.3 and the Simple Sidewalk activity.

- Goal: teach students to interact in a self-controlled and responsible way with the robot; learn to move, turn

- Code Concepts: Drag and drop blocks, Delete unwanted blocks

- Activities: simple sidewalk, obstacle course, and dance floor.

Duration: 1h 15 min

1. Introduction (5 mins)
   1. Introduction to the Hardware (robot, ipad)
   2. Introduction to app
2. Set-up the Robot (whiteboard, remote connection) (10 mins)
   1. Curriculum Cards: Getting to Know ROOT # 1, 2
3. Lesson 1.1 – Make Root Light Up (5 mins)
   1. Try different light combinations
   2. Check learning (action blocks)
4. Lesson 1.2 – Get Root Moving (5 mins)
   1. Try moving robot different distances
   2. Check learning (move block, multiple blocks)
      
5. Lesson 1.3 – Make Root Turn (5 mins)
   1. Try different turns, moves and turns.
   2. Check learning (combinations of turns)
      
6. Break (10 mins)
   
7. Build 1.A – Simple Sidewalk (15 mins)
   1. Teacher encourages student to place start/goal anywhere on board.
   2. Students draw path (maybe count number of blocks/turns)
   3. Students attempt a solution
      
8. Teacher Summary (5 mins)
   
9. Student Summary (15 mins)
