What educators are saying

A great and easy resource for students to practice the law of conservation of mass. Based on the questions, students can gain a clear understanding of what the law is and what to solve/look for when asked questions related to the topic.
Product is easy to use and easy to implement in class for my 7th graders. Thank you for a great product. Well priced too.

Description

This activity is aligned with the science TEKS 8.5 D where students will be able to recognize that chemical formulas are used to identify substances and determine the number of atoms of each element in chemical formulas containing subscripts. And part of 8.5 E where students will determine if a chemical equation follows the Law of Conservation of Mass.

Activity 1: Students will watch 2 videos on the Law of Conservation of Mass.

Activity 2: Students will work on 5 vocabulary definitions.

Activity 3: Students will count the number of blocks set up to represent a chemical equation and determine if both sides of the yield sign are equal.

Activity 4: Students will continue to count blocks set up to represent a chemical equation and determine if both sides of the equation are equal.

Activity 5: Students will label and count the numbers of atoms in a chemical equation (photosynthesis).

Activity 6: Students will practice counting atoms in chemical equations and determine if they follow the Law.

Activity 7: Students will determine the missing mass of a chemical formula based on the Law of Conservation of Mass.

Activity 8: Students will continue with practice by determining the missing mass of a chemical formula based on the Law of Conservation of Mass.

This activity covers the following standards:

TEKS 8.6E Investigate how mass is conserved in chemical reactions and relate conservation of mass to the rearrangement of atoms using chemical equations, including photosynthesis.

MS-PS1-5 Develop and use a model to describe how the total number of atoms does not change in a chemical reaction and thus mass is conserved.
