Description
This 130 page author study focuses on all of Laura Numeroff's "If You Give..." books. These circular texts are favorites of my students.
The activities in this packet can be completed in as little as one week or as long as a month. It is up to you for pacing. The activities in this packet are of varying ability levels. Pick and choose what works for you and your students. I like to do this packet towards the beginning of the year in first grade.
Activities Included:
Laura Numeroff Chart: This anchor chart can be used to compare the different "If You Give Books."
Writing Prompts: These eight writing prompts can be hung up in the hall or compiled into class-made books. They can be done as extension activities after reading the book or as independent literacy center activities.
Venn Diagrams: These five Venn Diagrams come with picture cards to glue onto the Venn Diagrams.
T-Chart: This t-chart compares reality vs. fantasy for the story If You Give a Moose a Muffin.
Art Projects: Two art center projects utilize following directions to create the cat from If You Give a Cat a Cupcake and the mouse from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.
Math Project: Two difficulty levels of this Cat's cupcake math project are included in this packet.
Story Unscramble: This activity goes with If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. It is a bit challenging for first graders. I recommend doing it whole class or only a sentence of it. Second grade and up could do it independently if you provide them with copies of the book.
Listening Center: This packet includes eight listening response logs.
File Folder Word Walls: There are five file folder word walls with pictures included in this packet. They work nicely with the writing prompts.
Writer's Workshop Lesson: The lesson included follows the Common Core Standards. It should be done as a cumulating activity for the author study.
Phonics Activities: There are three simple phonics activities included in this packet. Two word family activities and one initial sound sort.
Alliteration Chart: This chart is meant to help your students recognize alliteration and use it in their own writing
If You Give Mini Book: This book provides an outline for your students to write their own "If You Give" books.
Literacy Centers: I have updated the packet to include literacy centers. Included - If You Give a Mouse a Cookie Themed Tiny Words Search, Search/Read/Write the Room for -at and -ap words, Sort the -at and -ap words, Sort the -ig and -og words, Stamp the words, Build a Sentence, Spin a -at and -ap word.
Math Centers: I have updated this packet to include the following math centers - Domino Fact Families and Number Order.
