Polyphemus: Monster or Misunderstood?

Introduction/Task:

Polyphemus the cyclops is often perceived as a monster. We have many sources in ancient Greek and Latin tales that include myths surrounding Polyphemus. It is up to you to read these sources and develop your own opinion based on the literature. Each student must develop a skeleton to an essay that answers this document-based question:

“Was Polyphemus a monster or misunderstood?”

All texts are in English.

Be sure to:

1. Carefully read the document-based question at the top of this page. Consider what you already know about this topic. How would you answer the question if you had no documents to examine?

2. Now, WITH A PARTNER, read each document carefully, underlining key phrases and words that address the document-based question. You may also wish to use the margin to make brief notes.

3. Answer the questions that follow each document by which will also help you frame your final essay.

4. AFTER you have visited all 5 document stations and answered their questions, you may begin your outline of your DBQ response on the back of this page

5. In your DBQ outline, you must use 4 quotes from different documents. Incorporate at least one "although" sentence in order to address all sides of the argument.
