These cards focus on later developing sounds paired with vowels/syllables in different positions of words and phrases. This activity was designed to be used with older children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). Children with CAS often have difficulty producing consistent vowel sounds and have disrupted coarticulatory transitions between sounds and syllables. These cards address this issue while also targeting later developing phonemes.
Practice variability is key to motor planning and motor learning. It is also beneficial to use my Practice Variability Cue Cards along with these cards to target prosody at the same time. You can buy this set separately or in the bundle!
Cards included:
/l/ cards (10 vowel/syllable cards)
/r/ cards (10 vowel/syllable cards)
/s/ cards (10 vowel/syllable cards)
/z/ cards (6 vowel/syllable cards)*
th /ð-θ/cards (7 vowel/syllable cards)
ch /tʃ/ cards (8 vowel/syllable cards)
sh /ʃ/ cards (8 vowel/syllable cards)
j /dʒ/ cards (6 vowel/syllable cards)*
*these cards include some made-up/non-sense words because of the limited number of word targets available.
Each card has the syllable target on the top (with vowel description + IPA transcription).
Please note: I tried to keep the syllable shape as consistent as possible in these cards but some had to be slightly altered because of availability of appropriate target words matching the syllable shape.
How to use: Select the phoneme you want to target (l, r, s, z, th, ch, sh, or j) and practice each vowel/syllable combination card. Focus on the specific target phoneme and vowel. If you are working on sustaining vowels you can use any of the cards.
There are 65 total cards in this set.
I recommend that only trained clinicians use this activity with children with CAS.
