Lovecraft used the power of the unknown to inspire and horrify his readers. A lot of our contemporary cultural understanding of what goes into the horror genre comes from his stories. He had a profound influence on subsequent horror and science fiction writers. In his essay, "Supernatural Horror in Literature," Lovecraft writes: “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.”

"The Cask of Amontillado"

This classic tale of horror from Edgar Allan Poe is Common Core State Standards ELA and Quality Core Aligned. Post-reading activity. Students must analyze characterization, symbolism, mood, irony, point of view, and more - plus they must support their interpretations with textual evidence.
