Description
This is my absolute favorite unit in all of the levels that I teach! Here, I will tell you how I personally use this bundle, but it certainly can be adapted in countless ways.
These are read only and PDF files. They are not editable.
First, please be aware that the videos contained in the PowerPoint presentation are linked through YouTube. You must be able to access YouTube in order to use the links. Otherwise, you will have to download the videos on your own.
I teach this presentation in Spanish 4 as a full unit entitled “La música hispana.” The students receive a copy of the student information packet (included) and are responsible for filling in the information as we go through it. It keeps everything organized for them. This is also where they write their opinions and impressions of each genre. Following the presentation of the genres in class, the students complete the research presentation. I end the unit with the opinion essay and allow them to use their packets while they write.
There are 14 genres in this presentation. I have included two videos for each genre that I feel are a good representation of the music. Some of these are not the “latest” hits, per se. Though there are often newer songs that come out that perhaps the students may enjoy more, sometimes the videos just aren’t school appropriate.
The videos I have chosen are considered school appropriate for my school. Please use your discretion if you feel your school may not support using certain videos.
Each year, I look for new videos in each genre. I will update the presentation as I make my own updates and they will be made available to you at no cost for the duration of the time that I continue to teach this lesson. There are years that I don’t make any changes if I don’t find any videos/artists worth changing.
I present one genre per day over the course of several weeks. We go over the genre description, watch one video, discuss (in Spanish) their impressions of the music (not the video), watch the second video, discuss, and end by comparing the new genre to previous ones. This does not take all period for me – we do other chapter or grammar activities during the rest of class.
This presentation also works great if you would just like something to expose your students to authentic music in Spanish.
Use the videos as a filler activity at the beginning or end of the week.
Use it as a reward.
Use it as a warm-up writing activity. Watch the video and write your impressions, about what you understood, etc.
Finally, from time to time links break, copyright changes, or videos simply are no longer available. If you notice something wrong, please email me. I will update the file so that you can download the corrected version.
