Description
This bundle targets long vowel digraphs with hands-on learning materials. It has sorting activities and games to consolidate the long vowel letter pattern "When two vowels go walking, the first does the talking".
The SORT IT cards include 203 word/picture cards in four formats. I have used these cards in intervention for a while and extended the range from 45 to 203 cards as I encountered students who needed more exposure and practice. Some of the less frequent words I have included appeal to students who would benefit from extension into vocabulary building. See the PREVIEW to get an idea of the format and how you can use them to target needs you see in your students. I use them in different ways, but the sequence is similar to what I have described below. If my students are ELL I spend more time on context. If they find phonemic skills difficult I supplement with plastic or magnetic letters and blending before moving on to writing.
1. Teach the words and context through the word/picture cards.
2. Sort the word/picture cards into rhyming families. Sort them by beginning/medial or terminal sounds.
3. Once the words are known you can focus on decoding by matching word only and picture only cards.
4. Once decoding is known, focus on writing with the student writing. First I introduce the blank vowel card, then when they are known, the complete word.
For group work I would provide sorting activities with students using the word cards sorting by beginning, medial or terminal sounds. The long vowel letter combination lends itself to practice with short vowels for phonemic discrimination if confusion is experienced. I havethree DONKEY rhyming games I have made to target this skill.
The games I have included support the research that proves more learning takes place when games supplement direct teaching and targeted group work. They are fun and consolidate the skills you have identified.
