L02: Japanese Colors Language & Culture Lesson (K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd)

Students love the Japanese colors song and getting in touch with nature by making kosuridashi こすりだし (leaf rubbings) of real leaves to take home!! Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students love this Japanese fall colors lesson, but it can be adapted to higher grades. Includes the basic six rainbow colors plus brown. Lots of opportunities for vocabulary practice and writing hiragana at the teachers' discretion. Students love to create, so the payoff is creating a beautiful kosuridashi with their own Japanese writing. Add a nature walk to collect leaves!! Includes music, materials list, and a classroom printout. When you teach the obento lesson, you can name the colors in the foods and talk about the importance of colors to nutrition.
