What educators are saying

I had initial difficulty opening the file but the creator immediately responded and it works well now. I am impressed with the content and the support!
We studied South Africa in our Commonwealth week at school and this resource was great. We made a wonderful display and learnt about Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Description

Teach about kindness and tolerance in the classroom with a very kid-friendly lesson that features the southern African philosophy Ubuntu, “I am because we are.”

Learn about the great South African civil rights icon Desmond Tutu, who preached non-violence as he brought his anti-apartheid message to the world. Then learn about the African philosophy Ubuntu, a term Tutu introduced to the West. Along with Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu spread Ubuntu's message of humanity as he worked to heal post-apartheid rifts within communities in South Africa.

Conclude by making an easy art display featuring Ubuntu, showcasing rainbow hands that represent the diversity of people of the world. Great for bulletin boards.

This product includes, all as Adobe files:

  • 2 images files with embedded lessons in a slideshow format—one for Desmond Tutu and one for Ubuntu. You can read lessons directly from your computer as you show corresponding images to students on classroom Promethean board; there is no need to print this out.
  • Printables for Ubuntu writing piece (choose between solid lines or dashed lines for younger students). Includes suggested writing prompts.
  • Printables for art display—includes templates for hands and globe (full-page and half-page options).
  • Instructions for making Ubuntu Rainbow Hands of the World art display—2 individual options and 1 classroom project option.

Materials needed are colored copy paper or card stock onto which hand templates will be printed (or you can trace shapes onto construction paper), white copy paper for Ubuntu booklets, construction paper to back the booklets, scissors, pencils or pens with which to write, glue, and green marker or crayon.

TESTIMONIALS ABOUT OUR PRODUCTS

"In my nearly 30-year career in education, I have never seen children so engaged in their learning! International Travel Academy is truly a multi-disciplinary approach that enables children to explore the world in an unforgettable way. Students get a real sense of what it means to respect another country's heritage, beliefs and ways of living, thus making them more tolerant and internationally-minded. I highly recommend this program to educators and parents wishing to make learning come to life!"

– A Former Assistant Superintendent at Atlanta Public Schools

“(The five-day program) has given our school the unique opportunity to provide students with incredible experiences that align so well with our IB focus. Each spring with family and community support, our school essentially is transformed into our country of study for one full week. Teachers are easily able to follow the daily curriculum and activities provided, and the students truly enjoy this special week of instruction. From the art projects to festive food tastings, cultural dress, music, dance and traditions, the students spend this entire week engaged in new and exciting experiences of a new country. I would encourage all schools (IB, or not) to jump in and make a week like this happen for their students. It is incredibly gratifying to spend this week with kids as they come together to learn and share experiences like these across grade levels, school-wide. When we hear such rich discussion in classrooms and read their detailed writing about what they've learned as part of (the) week, it makes all the preparation, planning and expense totally worth it!! “
