What educators are saying

I used this with my AVID students as we prepped for Thanksgiving. They were highly engaged and loved the perspective discussion and the art work. Great resource.
I did the bonus 3 sisters seed mosaic activity with my students and they loved it! It was a hit with all the art classes I teach (K-5!). So fun to use corn, beans, and squash seeds to make beautiful art. The process and product were a success. Thank you for this wonderful project!!!

Description

This Native American project is ideal for a Thanksgiving activity. Inclusive of reading, social studies, Native American studies and art!

*Includes a FREE bonus lesson idea!

This Native American Thanksgiving project-lesson is:

  • Inspired the book Keepunumuk.
  • Lesson can be taught without the book
  • Teaches children about different perspectives
  • Told from the Wamponoag perspective. A Grandmother tells the story of the first Thanksgiving to her grandchildren.
  • Pre-learning- have your students tell you what they know about Thanksgiving and the foods they eat with their families
  • Creates a mindful engaging discussion whole group, small group or in pairs
  • Use the KWL method to record ideas
  • SEL (Social Emotional Learning) connecting cultures and demonstrating different perspectives. Elicits a wider lens to view this US National Holiday!

Making Art

  • Create a beautiful radial food design using traditional or modern table fare!
  • This lesson requires a minimal amount of drawing (lots of tracing)
  • Easy for most any level above 2nd grade. The hard part is folding paper!
  • Step by step hand out to help them understand the process.
  • Students will need a light source such as a window or light box to complete the tracing. This takes time so make sure you build this into your lesson planning.

Bonus lesson-Seed Mosaic

Included is a story about the 3 Sisters: Corn, Beans and Squash.

The extension for this story is to creat a seed mosaic with real seeds! Also provided is a link to examine a 3 Sisters garden.

**There is also a handout for kids to use for either lesson. Younger students can draw simple symmetry in each quadrant or draw seeds to create a drawing of a mosaic!

Included:

  • Q & A for discussion after reading
  • Outlines of examples of foods
  • Step by step directions for creating the radial design with photographs
  • Links for more information about the Wampanoag Tribe and 3 Sister gardens.
  • 2 artist statement handouts
  • A National Core Art Standard checklist
